The red-crowned crane is a long-lived bird, with an average lifespan of about 60 years in the wild, and the longest recorded lifespan for captive red-crowned cranes being 87 years. Throughout history, calligraphers and painters have often used "He Shou" and images of Pine and Crane Painting to convey wishes for a long life.
